(More customer reviews)I installed this in the tailgate of my '07 Dodge Ram so I could lock my bed. I had previously installed a locking tonneau cover and needed the ability to lock the tailgate separately.
This lock installs invisibly, and provides modest security. It effectively "jams" the tailgate handle from operating. Like any lock, if someone REALLY wants to get in, they will, but it will provide plenty of deterrent to keep the casual thief away.
The kit comes with the lock, wiring harness in a split wire loom, zip-ties and instructions. The wire was just the right length for my quad cab short box. If installed on a mega cab or long box the wires might need to extended.
Installation was about as I expected. Installing the locking mechanism was simple, taping into the factory wiring so it actuates with the power locks was simple. Running the wire from the tailgate to the cab was painful. I wanted a very clean install with the wire on top of the fuel tank which increased difficulty. If you're not as particular (anal?) as me and just zip-tie the wires to the frame rail, the install would be much easier.
With it wired into the power locks, I don't have to think about it. I know every time I lock the doors the tailgate is locked as well. The actuator is loud enough that you can hear it lock, but not annoyingly so.
Overall it's a great product. It does one thing, and does it well. The best part is knowing that anything I put in the bed of my truck is safe with just the press of a button.
