(More customer reviews)Dash kits are an affordable way to really dress up an interior, and Sherwood is one of the best, both in choice of look and in fit and finish. Unless you pay for the top of the line model, most autos come with a very monochromatic interior that can be quite sterile and harsh. These kits allow for truly custom look, at far less cost than the "Touring" model auto.
There are numerous choices ranging from wood grains to high tech. Have used various wood versions, and although I like them all, the Cherry versions are stained a candy apple red, the browns are stained almost a chocolate and the Maple burle type colors are somewhat orangeish. My favorites so far are the natural unstained/light stained ones, especally the platinum burle.
You can chose from real wood (higher cost) or a product that is a high resolution photo of real wood. Haven't used the real wood, but when I called Sherwood, they made several very good points, recommending the photo versions. First, the photos are excellent - you cannot tell they are not real. Second the photos are ones of the most perfect and interesting samples, meaning fabulous graining and color. And finally, they said that the true woods will fade in the sun over time, unlike the photos.
These products are made by cutting the wood veneer (photo or real) and applying a relatively thick liquid layer of polyurethane to the surface. The urethane is poured on with a syringe, it flows to the edge, levels out and dries. The finish is a very high gloss, not matte.
Application is simple and quick, easily under an hour. Just clean the surfaces with alcohol, wipe/dab on a bonding agent, peel backing from a piece and apply. Both alcohol and agent come with the package along with simple, clear instructions. It doesn't take a great deal of skill; HOWEVER, the pieces are VERY quick to adhere. Manufacturer claims that you can reapply if done very quickly, but can tell you, if you position a piece incorrectly, and then try to yank it off, you can end up stretching the product and then it will not lay down properly. After a short time, you will NOT be able to remove the piece without stretching it completely out of shape. Some of the pieces are intricate and large, so positioning does take some true planning and a good eye. It's essential that that the pieces lie naturally flat, not contorted into place - if not, in time, especially with warm weather, areas can "lift", although you can usually use adhesive to fix. I totally screwed up one large piece with thin side aspects, and by the time I got it off, I'd stretched it and it was never going to lie down properly. You can get replacement pieces, but they are not cheap.
As said, these are high gloss products. Two warnings: First, you must never wipe them down dry or even rub your finger on a spotted area. Would not recommend installing this if you have kids that touch/rub everything or a spouse that treats cars like appliances - they are just going to scratch the finish over time. Urethane is strong, but you can scratch the glossy surface very easily if you rub dust/grit into it. Second, NEVER, NEVER clean this product with commercial cleaners like Windex or Fantastic. They too will rub the dust right into the finish and if you use a product that contains alcohol/solvents, it will RUIN the finish. Alcohol is used to thin urethane - in fact, the intial coat used in sealing floors is simply urethane thinned with alcohol. To avoid this, apply a high quality car wax to the product before even installing. Then to clean, spary furniture polish, like Pledge, on it and buff it off. The Pledge acts as a lubricant to remove the dirt and provides an excellent gloss and protection factor. Think fine wood furniture.
The kits tend to come in two versions, a base kit (main areas of dash, shifter, radio surround, door handles) and a deluxe version. The deluxe version will have a myriad of extra pieces for dash vents, cup holders, dial surrounds, etc. These kits are nice, but there is a point that when you have a million little applications everywhere, it breaks up the interior and can almost look cheap. So, the good news is that the cheaper base kits look the best. You can always buy the delux pieces if you want to add them later.
So, highly recommend. There are many makers, but Sherwood is one of the best and manufactures for the auto industry.
